The project Skyrthalia vol. II – Pawsitive Parks will take place in Thessaloniki, Greece, from 3 to 22 December 2025. It is implemented as a 20-day volunteering in teams project under the framework of the activity “Be Sustainable, Sportive and Cultural” (compact action). Thessaloniki's stray animal crisis is pervasive, driven by low sterilization rates, limited funding, health risks from disease and parasites, and societal neglect or abuse. Despite commendable efforts from volunteers and animal welfare organizations, the scale of the issue demands comprehensive, coordinated action—including expanded neutering initiatives, stronger legal enforcement, increased municipal support, public education, and institutional resources. The project focuses on two main priorities: (1) Green practices for sustainable urban environments and (2) Protection, care, and support of pets’ quality of life in the city.

Motivation Letter
Coming from a remote rural area in the south of France, I have experienced firsthand the challenges of limited public resources and the importance of sustainable community development. Leading my students' union wellbeing team at Durham University, I have experience supporting students, which has strengthened my empathy, adaptability, and leadership skills, which I am eager to apply in a new setting. Additionally, having studied environmental law at university, this project particularly resonates with me as it combines environmental action, cultural preservation, and social impact. Enhancing West Thessaloniki’s parks through recycling and urban regeneration will allow me to contribute to a cleaner, more inclusive public space while learning from a diverse group of volunteers. As I embark on a gap year, this experience will deepen my understanding of urban ecology while enabling me to use my organisational and interpersonal skills to support both the environment and local communities.
