Hongbo Zhao & Pawsitive Parks

Updated: 14 hours ago

The project Skyrthalia vol. II – Pawsitive Parks will take place in Thessaloniki, Greece, from 3 to 22 December 2025. It is implemented as a 20-day volunteering in teams project under the framework of the activity “Be Sustainable, Sportive and Cultural” (compact action). Thessaloniki's stray animal crisis is pervasive, driven by low sterilization rates, limited funding, health risks from disease and parasites, and societal neglect or abuse. Despite commendable efforts from volunteers and animal welfare organizations, the scale of the issue demands comprehensive, coordinated action—including expanded neutering initiatives, stronger legal enforcement, increased municipal support, public education, and institutional resources. The project focuses on two main priorities: (1) Green practices for sustainable urban environments and (2) Protection, care, and support of pets’ quality of life in the city.

Motivation Letter:

Dear Team, Thanks for the opportunity! Viewing local stray crisis as a critical societal challenge, I believe I am well equipped to address this challenge through the teamwork and ESC spirit. I can bring strong practical experience as an active, near-senior volunteer at a local animal shelter, specializing in the care of abandoned dogs. This role has provided me with an advanced, hands-on understanding of animal behavior and welfare best practices, directly supporting the project’s core priority for pet quality of life. Crucially, my Social Sciences education background frames the stray crisis as a public awareness issue. I can effectively contribute beyond care by: -Engaging the community with culturally sensitive campaigns. -Raising public understanding of positive animal-human interaction and its link to urban sustainability. I am committed to collaborative teamwork, bringing my initiative and combined expertise to realize the vision of the project. Thanks!
