The pond full of life!

Hellooo, it’s Jaime again!

This vlog is dedicated to my favorite project, part of the MAD MAX activities: the pond for the Epycuros Garden. Both as a landscape architecture student and as a human being, I find this initiative so powerful, and I’m going to explain why!

This pond, which I initially thought was going to be a swimming pool ¯_( ͡❛ ͜ʖ ͡❛)_/¯, is one of the main biodiversity hotspots in Karatasiou Park, even considering its small size compared to the overall size of the park.

If we focus on the scientific side of it, this 5-square-metre pond will provide a habitat for aquatic biodiversity and all kinds of organisms related to water.

This could lead to an exponential increase in the number of species living in the area.

This scientific factor will also help the permaculture garden in the Epycuros Garden, because more species → more biodiversity → more fertilization → more production.

One problem with the pond is that it contains still water, and still water attracts mosquito larvae, creating a place where mosquitoes can reproduce freely and without many barriers. That’s why Martin introduced fish :) We know it’s not a permanent solution, but for the moment, it’s working, so we’ll just have to keep thinking about it!

Another species that inhabits the pond is the cat. Even though they are cute and we love them, they are actually one of the most dangerous species when it comes to ecosystems. They are predators of local fauna, which can disrupt the balance of the ecosystem and create problems in the flow of energy through it.

My favorite species introduced into the pond are the reeds, which Martin and I brought from Lake Koronia. They are aquatic plants with a fast growth cycle and are very prolific, which means they provide a place where insects can reproduce on their leaves and complete part of their life cycle there. (̶◉͛‿◉̶)

Even though it was Martin’s martyrdom, it is one of the prettiest projects I’ve worked on, and despite all the flaws it has, I’m sure it’s going to work!
