On Oct. 5 and 6, 2024, “Georgios Ivanof” Park in Thessaloniki was the scene of a major event, the “Ivanofeia 24,” a cultural and historical celebration paying tribute to the life and contribution of Georgios Ivanof, athlete, saboter and hero of the Greek Resistance during World War II.
The event culminated on Sunday, Oct. 6, at 11 a.m., with an evocative “Path of History and Memory,” an immersion in the past of old Thessaloniki, narrated through the figure of Ivanof. Born in Poland, Ivanof moved to Greece, where he distinguished himself for his sporting commitment and heroism during the Nazi occupation. The tour was guided by experts, who intertwined the memory of his life with the places in the park, revealing lesser-known aspects of his historical legacy.
The event was enhanced by an artistic and theatrical performance, curated by director Ilias Kakanikas, who staged highlights of Ivanof's life, with contributions from local actors and members of the “Jitterbugs SKG” theater company. Through dramatizations and performance art.
The association Esai En Roi was present with handiedance workshop.
The “Ivanofeia 24” festival is an important opportunity to remember and reflect on one of the most significant chapters of modern Greek history.
