Before any great project begins, there’s a moment where everyone comes together to understand, connect, and prepare. For us, that moment was our introductory presentation — a simple yet meaningful gathering that helped our students take their first steps into the world of inclusion.
Building Understanding from the Start
We wanted our students to feel confident, informed, and excited. So, during our session, we talked openly about autism in a way that was clear, age-appropriate, and honest. We explored how people can think, learn, or communicate differently — and how these differences make every team richer.
The goal wasn’t just to share information but to inspire empathy.
Creating a Safe Space for Questions
One of the best parts of the meeting was the curiosity of our students. They asked thoughtful questions, shared stories, and showed a genuine desire to understand. This conversation laid the groundwork for everything that will follow: cooperation, respect, and meaningful friendships.
By speaking together early on, we gave our team the tools they need to support one another — both on and off the court.
Introducing the Vision of Our Program
We also explained the purpose behind our initiative: using sports as a bridge for inclusion. Children learned how teamwork, play, and shared goals can connect students with and without autism in natural, joyful ways.
Understanding the “why” behind the project helped them feel part of something bigger — something that truly matters.
Setting the Tone for What Comes Next
This introductory presentation wasn’t just an informational step. It was the foundation of our journey. It helped our students see that inclusion begins long before the activities start. It begins with awareness, respect, and kindness.
As we move forward, we carry this moment with us — the moment our students chose to be a team not just in name, but in spirit.
