4th Interview of Rethinking Youth (EYW) - Art and Culture

I hope all of you are having a good week. Here in Greece, the youth is on fire, especially now that is starting the good weather and the restrictions due to Covid are relaxed. In these moments of changes and difficulties, art and culture always find a liberation path, a way of expression that allows us to break away from the day-to-day. That is about we are going to talk in today's interview: art and culture and how it is experienced by the youth.

Today we are going to interview to Basil, a 23-year-old Greek boy. He was born in Alexandria but is living in Thessaloniki for several years. He studies English and French Translation and Interpretation and also works in a popular bar at the city center. He is a lover of music and clothes and has been always in contact with the art world.

Do you think that young people around you is committed with the culture and local art? What about you?

In my opinion, many people around me, especially young ones , are drawn to all forms of art as a way to express themselves and be part of the local culture . Me as well, I use art for self expression as I always had this kind of tendencies .

How are the social spaces for culture and art in your city?

In Greece in general, there are plenty of cultural spaces in the cities as well as big festivals and art-related gatherings. Here in Thessaloniki is very nice the fact that normally culture is open to everyone, especially those self-managed spaces such as some associations and spaces at universities where all expression of art and culture can be experienced and everyone is free to do and express whatever they want... I love that way of living art.

Do you think that it’s important to support the culture? Or it’s a field that doesn’t interest you?

I think it’s highly important to contribute to the local culture and to support art workers especially self-made and local ones. I always have tried to support the local artists and especially crafts workers, many people do not realize the work behind a picture or a jewel.

How do you think that Covid has affected the development of art and culture?

There’s no doubt that COVID has negatively affected the culture, since gatherings and festivals were cancelled. But I don’t think that the situation has stopped people from expressing through it and finding a way to make it happen despite the restrictions.

How do you express yourself by the art?

As an amateur artist, I express myself through music, painting and films. I firmly believe it’s important to continue producing art and to support other artists even if the world is going through a crisis. Art is the way we express ourselves as human beings, I think it is very necessary for the society, so now more than ever, when it has been most affected, we must support it and fight for it.
