The first week in Thessaloniki

The start of my first week was only a little bit stressful, there was a lot intake of information for activities, events and other job details. But when that’s been said, it was pretty straight forward, I just take it day by day and don’t think too much about the future.

I didn’t expect to go as they did. It is a lot more calmer than I thought, and I think it’s definitely something I can get used to.

I was also told that if I do some work they want me to do, I later get to do more stuff I want. Or I at least get a bigger say in what I do.

I did my first day trip away from the city and went to Halkidiki. I was surprised by the view from the bus while going there. With the beautiful mountains and the sea(when you could see it). I went to Toroni. It was nice there, I spent the first hours walking between beaches and dipping in the ocean when I felt like it. Then I found a smaller cove that was not easily accessible and you had to climb down a steep little trail. But when I got there it was all worth it because there were not many people there at all, so it was really quiet and nice. I then spent a couple hours laying on the beach under an umbrella I found by the trash bins (don’t worry it didn’t smell), read my book and slept for a bit. Im a big fan of the small small churces you can see everywhere, they are to me like collectables all around place to collect(pictures of). On the way back my phone died and it was too dark to read so I was left for two hours with my thoughts.

During my first week I’ve also done some city exploring as well as tasted some Greek food like bougatsa, gyros and souvlaki. And found some spots in the city where I can just relax with a drink, somewhere calm and quiet. And something I really am a big fan of is the older men and women sitting outside

with a drink for hours, just talking with each other and having no scheduled time.

Soon another volunteer will join me in the apartment and I will have to show her around the city and teach her everything I’ve been taught, even though we have kind of different work.
